Abstract

This note explores the agrologistics challenges and opportunities faced by the agriculture sector systems in Guinea-Bissau, with a specific focus on the impacts on family farming systems. Agriculture accounts for a substantial share of gross domestic product and employment in the country, and the post-farmgate stages of the value chain can account for more than half of the value added to its key agricultural products. In addition, the agriculture sector represents a critical driver of deforestation and landscape degradation and presents significant opportunities for cutting greenhouse gas emissions by improving sectoral efficiency. Given agriculture’s large economic and environmental footprints in the country, the performance of the agrologistics system has large potential impacts on economic growth, employment, and wellbeing. In fact, efficient, sustainable and inclusive agrologistics are critical to promote green, resilient and inclusive growth in Guinea-Bissau. Overall, this study aims to identify agrologistics bottlenecks that affect the development of the main agrifood value chains in Guinea-Bissau, considering synergies between multiple objectives such as export promotion and trade integration, creation of green and decent jobs, food security, poverty reduction and inclusion of vulnerable populations, climate change adaptation and mitigation. The objective of this note is to inform public and private stakeholders in the country; identify key challenges, opportunities and best practices in strengthening agrologistics systems, where these are understood to represent the entire value chain from the farmgate to the final consumer; and present concrete, operational recommendations for consideration by public and private sector actors engaged in agrologistics in Guinea-Bissau.
